Exciting Career Opportunities Available for Architects

Washington, DC—The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), a nonprofit organization, in Washington, DC, has immediate openings for experienced architects to fill a variety of staff positions.

NCARB is a federation of all the architectural registration boards in the United States. NCARB sets the standards for architectural registration. It also interprets these standards, maintains records, and acts as the central clearinghouse, and contact point for all interns, architects, and registration boards when dealing with issues concerning registration and the professional conduct of architects.

Staff members work with leaders in the field to help shape the future of the architectural profession and safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public by developing and recommending standards for architectural registration and the practice of architecture.


NCARB has immediate openings for the following position(s):

Assistant Director (BEA), Education

Major Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the Broadly Experience Architect (BEA) and Broadly Experience Foreign Architect (BEFA) programs.
  • Respond to questions from BEA and BEFA applicants, review applications and submission documents.
  • Coordinate education evaluations and NCARB Record applications and evaluations.
  • Plan, facilitate, and attend committee and task force meetings.
  • Communicate with committee chair and committee members.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations at various NCARB, Member Board, AIA, and other related professional organization meetings.
  • Supervise the Manager, Education.

Travel out of the Washington, DC area, including approximately eight
weekends a year, is required.

To be considered for these positions, candidates must have:

  • A minimum 5-year professional degree in Architecture, and a license to practice architecture in at least one NCARB jurisdiction.
  • An NCARB Certificate or meet all NCARB certification requirements.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, customer service, and
    communication skills.
  • The ability and willingness to travel (including weekends).

Assistant Director, ARE Development (Graphic)

NCARB has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director, ARE Development (Graphic) for the development and scoring of the graphic portions of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

Major Duties and Responsibilities are:

Coordinate the on-going development and scoring processes of the graphic portions of the Architect Registration Examination.

Attend, facilitate, and assist in the planning of Grading Subcommittee meetings. Interface with NCARB member board members participating in the process.

Attend, facilitate, and assist in planning of the Graphic Pretest Subcommittee meetings.

Maintain (and revise as necessary) ARE test specifications and ensure that development process conforms to current specifications.

Assist the Director in planning and preparing for meetings of the Committee on Examination, as necessary.

Coordinate the efforts of the Test Development consultant responsible to the Graphic Pretest Subcommittee and the Grading Subcommittee. Attend meetings as necessary to ensure the completion of all test development obligations.

Coordinate efforts of the Grading Subcommittee with the efforts of the ARE Subcommittee. Attend ARE meetings as necessary or requested by the Director.

Assist the Manager, ARE Administration, in the efforts of the Test Administration consultant responsible for the delivery of the ARE. Attend operations meetings as necessary to ensure successful delivery to candidates.

Assist in the response to candidate inquiries related to the content and development of the ARE by e-mail, correspondence, or telephone.

Assist the Director in planning and preparing the budgets of the related committees. Periodically monitor the budget and report any perceived or anticipated shortfalls.

Represent the Council and its activities at various NCARB, Member Board, AIA, and other related professional organization meetings and presentations. Prepare for, present, and demonstrate the ARE as requested.

Attend annual conferences of national testing and licensure organizations. Represent the ARE development process through formal or informal means as requested.

Assist in the preparation and revision of ARE related documents such as the ARE Writer’s Manual, the ARE Guidelines, the ARE Study Guides, ARE Practice Program, e-news, Fast Facts, related portions of the NCARB web page and any ARE related publication.

Monitor known web forums for disclosure of test content and assist in compiling all relevant information for review and possible disciplinary action.

Prepare, attend, and conduct any member board sanctioned .
